Once your puppy is comfortable with basic handling, brushing and coat care at home can become part of your weekly routine. You don’t need to be a professional groomer — just consistent and gentle. Here’s how to keep your doodle’s coat looking and feeling good between grooms.
🛒 What You’ll Need at Home
- Slicker brush – Removes loose fur, separates curls, and starts detangling
- Stainless steel comb – Checks for mats near the skin and under the ears/legs
- Detangling spray (optional) – Makes brushing smoother and prevents breakage
- Dog shampoo + conditioner – Use pH-balanced, gentle formulas
- Dog nail clippers or grinder – Only if you’re confident (ask your groomer if unsure)
- Towel or non-slip bath mat – Helpful for bath time and drying

- Start young – Build the habit early, even before they really need it
- Slicker first – Work gently through the top layer of the coat
- Comb second – Use to check for hidden tangles and mats
- Focus spots – Behind ears, under legs, chest, tail base, and inner thighs

📅 How Often Should I Brush?
- Puppy coat (8–20 weeks): 2–3x a week for just a few minutes
- Coat change (~5–12 months): Every other day — mats form quickly
- Adult coat (12+ months): 2–3x a week depending on coat type
🚨 Missed a week? Mats can form fast. Don’t try to yank them out — it can hurt. Ask your groomer instead.
🛁 Bathing Tips
- Bathe every 4–6 weeks or before a full groom
- Brush before you bathe — water tightens mats
- Use warm water and dog-safe shampoo
- Towel dry and use a low setting blow-dryer while brushing (if tolerated)
✂️ Should I Trim at Home?
For most people, it’s better to leave full haircuts to the professionals. But:
- Trim fur that curls into the eyes
- Check and tidy around the bum
- Use rounded-tip scissors for safety
Never attempt to shave a matted coat — it’s very easy to nick the skin. Ask your groomer.
